Hong Kong International Airport World’s Best Airport 2011
Hong Kong International Airport has been named the World’s Best Airport for 2011. The title was awarded in Copenhagen at the World Airport Awards. The award was a culmination of a nine month survey with more than 11 million people questioned including air travelers from around the earth.

Hong Kong International Airport is sometimes known as Chek Lap Kok Airport named after the island on which it lies. The airport opened in 1998 when it replaced the now closed Kai Tak Airport. It serves as an important gateway for mainland China and the rest of Asia. In 13 years the airport has won a total of eight World Airports Awards. It has one of the largest airport terminal buildings in the world which is in operation 24 hours per day. It is also an important hub for cargo transportation. It recently overtook Memphis International Airport as the busiest airport in the world for cargo. The airport also handles around 50 million passengers per year who pass through its doors making it the 11th busiest airport in terms of passenger numbers. It is also very important to the economy employing around 60,000 people.
