British Government Have to Look Closely at Aviation Policy

British airports face problems, in the coming years, with capacity with the UK government needing to take a close look at solutions for the long term. BAA is expected to ask parliament for a third runway at Heathrow or face falling further behind some of the top airports in Europe such as Paris and Frankfurt as they bid for lucrative routes to China.

A third runway would not impact on the UK taxpayer as the project would be self funded by the aviation industry. Heathrow is currently at full capacity since the current coalition, who came to power in 2010, blocked expansion. The government also put a stop to expansion at Gatwick and Stansted.

A group consisting of; the Chamber of Commerce, the Trades Union Congress, BAA, IAG, Manchester Airports Group, Virgin Atlantic was hoping for a long term strategy that extended much further than the current parliamentary term.

The aviation industry offers so much more to the economy than most people realise with the government being cited as being out of touch.

However critics of a third runway in the west London area believe that it would add far too many aircraft over the already busy capital. A decision needs to be found quickly to either put the idea to rest once and for all or to look at expansion or new airports.
