British Airways to Axe Plans for 400 New Jobs

British Airways yesterday said that it would no longer be able to create 400 new jobs following the Government’s decision to increase and impose the air passenger duty on flights from the UK.

British Airways and bosses of many of the largest airways in the UK condemned the British Government’s consultation on air passenger tax as a complete waste of money. The tax will be increased by 8% next April and will be imposed on anyone who is flying after that date even if they have already booked and purchased a ticket. The tax raises £2 billion per year for the Treasury. Companies such as Ryanair, AIG, Easyjet and Virgin Atlantic have asked for the tax to be scrapped.

The tax has already cost around 25,000 British jobs and is harming an already fragile economy just at a time when we can ill afford it. Many foreign operators will look to the UK as a difficult and expensive place to do business with.

Up until now private jet owners and users have been exempt from the tax causing much debate. The tax will come into force for private jets in 2013.
